WHY ARE OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS?

When it comes to general health there are a few essential things that are needed on a daily basis in order to maintain a healthy system. The human body can make most of the types of fats it needs from other fats or raw materials. That isn’t the case for omega-3 fatty acids (also called omega-3 fats). These are essential fats—the body can’t make them from scratch but must get them from food. Foods high in Omega-3 include fish (cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, halibut), vegetable oils, nuts (especially walnuts), flax seeds, flaxseed oil, and leafy vegetables.

What makes omega-3 fats special?

They are an integral part of cell membranes throughout the body and affect the function of the cell receptors in these membranes. They provide the starting point for making hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction and relaxation of artery walls, and inflammation. They also bind to receptors in cells that regulate genetic function. Likely due to these effects, omega-3 fats have been shown to help prevent heart disease and stroke, may help control lupus, psoriasis, eczema, and rheumatoid arthritis, and may play protective roles in cancer and other conditions.

Due to the fact that most Americans eat way too much of the omega 6-oils found in meats and most vegetable oils, they suffer a relative deficiency of omega-3 oils.   In return, this deficency can affect the conditions listed above along with many others.

CONDITIONS BENEFITED BY FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTATION:

Allergies
Menopause
Osteoporosis
Alzheimer’s Disease
Asthma
Crohn’s Disease
Depression
Diabetes
Eczema
Psoriasis
Macular Degeneration
Arthritis
Baby Development
ADHD
Post-Partum
Migraines
Ulcerative Colitis
Cancer
High Cholesterol
AI Dx: Lupus, MS

Omega-3 fats are a key family of polyunsaturated fats. There are three main omega-3s:
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) come mainly from fish, so they are sometimes called marine omega-3s.
  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the most common omega-3 fatty acid in most Western diets, is found in vegetable oils and nuts (especially walnuts), flax seeds and flaxseed oil, leafy vegetables, and some animal fat, especially in grass-fed animals. The human body generally uses ALA for energy, and conversion into EPA and DHA is very limited.
Supplementation of Omega 3 Fatty Acids:

One of the major advances in nutritional medicine has been the ability to produce a fish oil supplement that is highly concentrated source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and also free from damaged fats (lipid peroxides), heavy metals, environmental contaminants, and other harmful compounds.
I always inform my patients, how important it is to use pharmaceutical-grade fish oil concentrates which are superior to earlier fish oil products as opposed to cheaper concentrates of fish oil.  TIP: AVOID buying fish oils from drug stores such as: CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Target, and local grocery stores.  Consult with your Alternative Medicine Expert about high-quality fish oil supplemenation.

RECOMMENDATION FOR GENERAL HEALTH:

Take a High-Quality Fish Oil Product to Provide 1.000 mg EPA + DHA per day

THE HEALING POWER OF COCONUT OIL: USES & CURES

Research has finally uncovered the secrets to this amazing fruit; namely healthy fats called medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), these unique fats include:  Caprylic acid, Lauric acid, and Capric acid. To date over 1500 studies have proven that coconut oil has a variety of health driven benefits and uses, such as:

  1. Food Uses
  2. Body and Skin Care
  3. Household
  4. Natural Medicinal Use

***Lets Start with the basics***
Coconut oil is one of the few foods that can be "superfood.”  Its unique combination of fatty acids can have profound positive effects on health.   Most of the fatty acids in the diet are long-chain fatty acids, but the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil are classified as a “metabolized differently".   In which the MCFA, Lauric Acid and Caprylic, has been known to kill harmfil pthogens like bacteria, viruses and fungi.  For example, these substances have been shown to kill the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus and the yeast Candida Albicans, a common source of yeast infections in humans.

THE BIG QUESTION: WHAT TYPE OF COCONUT OIL???

A: For external uses, expeller pressed or other types of refined coconut oil will work, but for internal use, an unrefined virgin coconut oil is best.  Nevertheless, to reap the many benefits of coconut oil, it is essential to choose organic unrefined coconut oil.  Organic, unrefined coconut oil is extracted from fresh coconut meat; not from dried coconut.  The oil is then separated from the water, through centrifuge, fermentation, boiling or refrigeration. Fermentation is the preferred method to ensure that the coconut oil retains its inherent health benefits.

COCONUT OIL FOOD USES

1. Cooking at High Heat (Sautéing and Frying) – Coconut oil is great for cooking at a high heat because of its high smoke point. Many other oils like olive oil can oxidize when heated but because coconut oil is made up of healthy saturated fats it remains stable under high temperatures.

2. “Buttering  Your Toast” – For breakfast in the morning, try spreading coconut oil on your sprouted grain bread, instead of conventional butter. The slight coconut flavor, more pronounced in the unrefined coconut oils, lends a lovely aroma and taste to your toast.

3. Natural Energy Booster – The medium chain triglycerides in coconut oil, when partnered with chia seeds, will give you an energy boost when you need a mid-afternoon pickup, or after a strenuous workout. Chia seeds are known to boost performance, and endurance while the coconut oil aids in digestion and metabolizing of the chia seeds. Mix 1 tablespoon coconut oil with ½ tablespoon of chia seeds, and enjoy from the spoon, or spread on sprouted grain bread.

4. Boost Nutrients in Smoothies – Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to any fruit smoothie for a boost of cholesterol fighting compounds. Side benefit? It improves the texture and mouth feel of smoothies, while adding healthy fats to your diet.

5. Replacement for Non-stick Cooking Spray – In a non-stick skillet, sometimes eggs still stick. With coconut oil, that is no longer a problem. Add just a teaspoon or two of coconut oil to the pan, and melt. Add the eggs and cook as desired. Cleanup will be a breeze.

6. Create Healthy Homemade Mayonnaise – Use as oil in homemade mayonnaise recipe mixed with egg yolks. In a blender, combine 4 egg yolks, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, and ½ teaspoon dried mustard. Blend until combined. With blender still running, slowly add 1 cup coconut oil (melted), and ½ cup olive oil to create an emulsion. If you add the oils too fast, the mayo will break. If this happens, all is not lost; add ½ tablespoon of tahini, and blend until smooth.

7. Replace Unhealthy Fats When Baking – Yes, you can bake with coconut oil. Use the same amount as butter or vegetable oil that is called for in the recipe. Use coconut oil to grease baking sheets and cake pans, and your baked goods will simply slide right out.

8. Sports Drink Replacement – Coconut oil gives the body quick energy in the form of its quick acting MCFA fats. Instead of relying on sugary processed drinks, try adding coconut oil and chia seeds to water with fresh fruit.

9. Natural Throat Lozenge – Use coconut oil in place of store-bought lozangers that are usually made using artificial flavors and colors. Try swallowing ½-1 teaspoon of  coconut oil up to 3 times daily to ease the pain of a sore throat or cough, and combine licorice root tea with coconut oil for a natural throat soother. Try adding licorice root (fennel root), honey, and lemon too for an extra immunity boost again viruses and colds.

COCONUT OIL BEAUTY & SKIN USES

4. Lip Balm – Dry chapped lips can happen during any season. Commercial lip balms are packed with unhealthy (and potentially toxic) ingredients, which is particularly concerning since we put them on our lips. The healing properties of coconut oil helps to nourish the lips, provides a touch of sun protection, and most importantly, is safe to consume. Combine 2 tablespoons of coconut oil with 2 tablespoons of beeswax, and 1 tablespoon of shea butter in a nonstick saucepan. Warm slowly until melted. Use a small funnel to refill used lip balm containers. Allow to set up for 6 hours.

5. Wound Salve – Coconut oil has been used for thousands of years to speed healing of rashes, burns, and open wounds. You can use it just like you would neosporin. To make a homemade neosporin mix coconut oil, frankincense, lavender and melaleuca oil. The antibacterial and antifungal properties of coconut oil help to keep the area free of infection, and the lauric acid in coconut oil helps to speed healing.

6. Cellulite Solution – To fight stubborn and unsightly cellulite, mix 1 tablespoon of coconut oil with 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil and massage in a firm circular motion into affected areas. Follow with dry brushing to help stimulate circulation and encourage cellular detox and my cellulite slim down juice recipe for best results.

As a moisturizer, coconut oil can help strengthen hair while helping hair to retain moisture. Depending on the length and texture of your hair, you may need anywhere from 1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil as a conditioner. Warm in the palms of your hands, and starting at the ends, work the oil into the hair.

12.  Hair De-tangler for Children – Use a small amount of coconut oil on your children’s’ hair when it’s extra nutty and needs a natural, smooth solution for getting it brushed easily. Rub oil between your palms and then onto wet hair before combining through.

COCONUT OIL HOUSEHOLD USES

In a recent study, researchers found that coconut oil was active against species of Candida at 100% concentration, greater than the drug fluconazole. Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to your diet, and apply pure coconut oil directly to affected areas twice per day, until symptoms resolve. Follow my candida treatment protocol to help beat Candida. RoyalHealingND.com

WHY NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTATION IS ESSENTIAL IN TODAY’S SOCIETY?

There seems to be an on-going debate as to whether nutritional supplements are actually necessary. Some studies claim that people who take a multivitamin are not any healthier than those who don’t. Other studies have proved time and time again that supplements have played an integral part in helping promote health and wellness.  There are countless studies showing that by simply increasing your vitamin and mineral intake you can promote mental clarity, weight loss, boost your immunity, reduce stress, prevent cancer and other diseases, combat depression, lower blood pressure, reduce cravings, increase energy levels, improve sleep, and regulate digestion. Given this information is it little wonder that many experts now advise that an all-round supplementation program, in conjunction with a healthy diet, is a savvy health choice.

Reason #1: Food Isn’t What It Used To Be

Some people theorize that we get all the nutrients we need from food. While that is a nice idea, it simply is not the case anymore. At one point in time, food was grown in your neighborhood, if not if your own backyard. The chickens, cows, and goats ate what they were naturally designed to digest. Fruits and vegetables were allowed to ripen and gain the maximum level of nutrients right on the vine, where they were then pick and almost immediately consumed. The soils were rich with minerals, and chemical pesticides had yet to be introduced.

Yes, at that time, food did provide the nutrients necessary for health. Now, soil has been overused and lacks in overall nutritional value. Fruits and vegetables are picked way too early and are ripen with ethanol gas while they sit in a dark truck traveling across the country. Animals are fed processed foods that are unnatural to their digestion and making them sick. And let’s not forget about all the man-made foods (GMOs) that are completely unrecognizable in nature, the chemicals added to foods to preserve them, and the genetic mutations made to plants in order to mass-produce crops.

Nothing about our food is the same. Unless you raise your own meat, grow your own produce, and rotate your soils every seven years to ensure mineral replenishment, then the truth is your food does not contain the ideal nutrients anymore.

Reason #2: Most People Don’t Eat Enough Of The Right Foods

Do you get a minimum of five servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit each day? Do you eat enough complete proteins, containing all eight essential amino acids? How about oils and fiber?
Even if our food was still nutritionally dense and unprocessed, most people do not get enough of the right foods to meet their bodies’ demands for vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, and amino acids. Additionally, certain people have conditions that demand higher levels of certain nutrients, almost to the point where it’s impossible to physically consume enough in a single setting or day.

Reason #3: New Diseases Are Linked To Nutrition Deficiencies

The average life span is far greater than is used to be, thanks to the reduction of acute illnesses, such as the plague or small pox. Instead, we live a long life but suffer from chronic and long-term illness, including arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, thyroid conditions, fibromyalgia, hormonal imbalances, depression and anxiety, acid reflux disease, and so on.
While acute illnesses often require conventional medical treatment, chronic illnesses can frequently be linked back to a nutritional deficiency or digestive disorder. If the problem is lack of nutrition, then it would just make sense that the solution would be an increase in nutrition, which can be achieved with a good diet and the right supplementation.

Reason #4: Environmental Toxins Create A Higher Demand For Nutrients

Cars, manufacturing plants, chemical pesticides, cell phones, radiation, household cleaners, cosmetics, birth control pill, vaccinations…this list could go on and on. Our technological advances have brought on toxic overload. Because most of us probably won’t trade in our cell phones or vehicles, we are in a position of having to combat the negative effects our body experiences because of those things. Higher exposure to toxins, even in the form of excess stress, leads to a greater need for phytonutrients, antioxidants, and other immune boosting nutrients. Once again, we’re faced with a situation where food alone may not be enough and we need supplements to assist the body in times of both chronic and critical exposure.

Reason #5: Today’s Supplements Were Yesterday’s Medicine

Many of the people who argue we do not need supplements are probably the same people prescribing pharmaceutical drugs, thus acknowledging the fact that some treatment method is necessary. What we have forgotten is that what we now call nutritional supplements used to be medicinal treatments. Years ago, when you were in pain, you weren’t given aspirin; you were given white willow bark. When you had a stomach acid, you didn’t take Tums; you drank peppermint or ginger tea (or apple cider vinegar).
Considering this, it seems hard to believe than anyone could ever deny the need for nutritional supplementation, given that they have been used for the treatment of disease for centuries. Today we see them in capsules, tablets, and powders rather than ground in our kitchen with a mortar and pestle, but ultimately, they are serving the same purpose.

In summary, it is obvious that nutritional supplements are an essential element in the process of achieving optimal health. That said, it is also important to remember that supplements are just that: supplements. A well-rounded, clean diet is the best foundation to any healthy or healing lifestyle; however, supplements are there to fill in the gaps and address the needs that food alone cannot meet.
