THE HEALING POWER OF BONE BROTH...LET IT HEAL YOU TOO!

Image result for healing power of bone broth

DID YOU KNOW?

Many of our modern diseases appear to be rooted in an unbalanced mix of microorganisms in your digestive system, courtesy of an inappropriate and unbalanced diet that is too high in sugars and too low in healthful fats and beneficial bacteria

For thousands of years, there have been traditional foods like fermented vegetables and cultured dairy that have been touted for their health benefits. But one common healing food that is now being recognized for its incredible health benefits is bone broth.

BUT WHY?

Bone broth is excellent for "healing and sealing" your gut, to use Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride term. Dr. Campbell's GAPS Nutritional Protocol, described in her book, Gut and Psychology Syndrome(GAPS), centers around the concept of "healing and sealing" your gut through your diet.

Nutrition researchers Sally Fallon and Kaayla Daniel of the Weston A. Price Foundation explain that bone broths contain minerals in forms that your body can easily absorb: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and others.   Just one of it’s added benefits is the fact it contains chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine, a supplements to reduce inflammation, arthritis and joint pain.

FACT:

Broth or "stock" plays an important role as it's easily digestible, helps heal the lining of your gut, and contains valuable nutrients. Abnormalities in your immune system are a common outcome of GAPS, and such immune abnormalities can then allow for the development of virtually any degenerative disease.

The Healing Benefits of Bone Broth

There are many reasons for incorporating good-old-fashioned bone broth into your diet.   The following health benefits attest to its status as "good medicine."

  • Helps heal and seal your gut, and promotes healthy digestion: The gelatin found in bone broth is a hydrophilic colloid. It attracts and holds liquids, including digestive juices, thereby supporting proper digestion.

Inhibits infection caused by cold and flu viruses, etc.: A study published over a decade ago found that chicken soup indeed has medicinal qualities, significantly mitigating infection

  • Reduces joint pain and inflammation, courtesy of chondroitin sulphates, glucosamine, and other compounds extracted from the boiled down cartilage
  • Fights inflammation: Amino acids such as glycine, proline, and arginine all have anti-inflammatory effects. Arginine, for example, has been found to be particularly beneficial for the treatment of sepsis  (whole-body inflammation).  In addition, Glycine also has calming effects, which may help you sleep better.

Promotes strong, healthy bones: As mentioned above, bone broth contains high amounts of calcium, magnesium and other nutrients that play an important role in healthy bone formation
Promotes healthy hair and nail growth, thanks to the gelatin in the broth

IT'S ABOUT EATING RIGHT FOR YOUR HEALTH

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM AND BREAST HEALTH

Lymphatic System Functions

I learn more and more in my private practice that many people are not aware of importance systems such as the lymphatic system.  This system functions as an intricate system of thin tubes that runs throughout the human body.  In which it is closely related to the cardiovascular system and its primary purpose is to help the body to filter out organisms that cause disease and other toxins.
The lymphatic system has a constant flow of lymph and acts as a second circulatory system. The difference between the lymph and the cardiovascular system is that it works with white blood cells which protect you from becoming infected by bacteria and viruses. The lymphatic system functions by moving lymph through the system with pressure exerted by the squeezing of skeletal muscles. Once it reaches the thoracic duct (and the right lymphatic duct for the right upper body’s lymph system) the duct drains into the circulatory system, acting as a constant sewerage system for the body.

HOW DOES THE MAGIC WORK?
While the main function of other tissue fluid is to deliver nutrients and goodness to the cells – the role of lymph is to clean up the waste that is left behind by this process and to dispose of it. This waste can include dead blood cells, pathogens, and cancer cells.
These lymphatic system functions also include the absorption of excess fluid and its return to the blood stream, absorption of fat (in the villi of the small intestine) and undertaking the immune system function.
WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?
That being said the Lymphatic System is an essential system that supports our ability to naturally detox.  The reality is that you have twice as much lymph fluid in your body as blood.  As the lymph continuously bathes each cell and drains away the detritus in a circulatory system the body is naturally going through detoxification.
The body’s ability to detox well starts in the lymphatic system. Interestingly, the lymph starts in the digestive system, making optimal detoxification a result of optimal digestion. At Royal Healing Natural Health Center we teach our patients how to reset digestive strength and the body’s natural detox pathways.
LYMPHATIC BREAST MASSAGE
To specifically effect lymph in massage, it is necessary to pump in a specific direction, at a specific pace. This mimics the natural action of the lymphatic system.

Put your hand in your armpit and push inward and upward. Go deep into the armpit. Pump upward and release. Do this five to ten times.

Grab your entire breast and move it upward toward the armpit. If your breasts are large, this may take more than one hand position. Do this three to five times.  Grab your breast and pump directly inward toward the chest wall. Do this five times.

Do You Have Leaky Gut Syndrome? (You May Be Surprised)

What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?
The gut is naturally permeable to very small molecules in order to absorb these vital nutrients. Leaky Gut Syndrome is a condition that involves damage of the lining of the small intestine causing incompletely digested nutrients, toxins, bacteria, and wastes to “leak” through the intestines and flood the blood stream. These foreign substances then entering the blood and cause an autoimmune response in the body including inflammatory and allergic reactions such as respiratory and digestive issues, headaches, joint pain, skin conditions, and more.
Once these tight junctions get broken apart, it is defined as leaky gut. When your gut is leaky, things like toxins, microbes, and undigested food particles can escape from your intestines and travel throughout your body via your bloodstream. Your immune system marks these "foreign invaders" as pathogens and attacks them. The immune response, hence “autoimmunity”, to these invaders can appear in the form of any of the nine signs you have a leaky gut, which are listed below.
Because damaged cells in the intestines may fail to produce the enzymes needed for proper digestion, absorption of essential nutrients is compromised, creating further imbalance throughout the body that can contribute to various issues including hormone imbalance and a weakened immune system.
Thus, substances leak out of the intestines, the liver is then forced to work extra hard to filter them out of the blood stream. The extra burden on the liver can result in the accumulation of fatty liver tissue.  Some toxins may be sent back into the blood stream when the liver’s ability to detoxify fails, where they reach muscles and connective tissues.
Be aware that Leaky Gut Syndrome isn’t typically diagnosed in western medicine; however, it can be affecting your health as it does to many others.  There are several health issues related to Leaky Gut Syndrome which go undiagnosed, misdiagnosed or are ignored by traditional medicine. Patients may be left with frustrating and uncomfortable symptoms and no answers.

#1) Are you having any of the listed symptoms?

#2) Have you been testing?

#3) Have you be thoroughly explained the condition?

#4) Do you know where to seek out support?

What causes leaky gut?
The main culprits are foods, infections, and toxins. Gluten is the number one cause of leaky gut.  In sensitive people, gluten can cause the gut cells to release zonulin, a protein that can break apart tight junctions in the intestinal lining.  Other factors such as sugar, excessive alcohol, infections, toxins, stress and age can also cause these tight junctions to break apart.  The most common infectious causes are candida overgrowth, intestinal parasites, and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
DID YOU KNOW???
Toxins come in the form of medications, like Motrin, Advil, steroids, antibiotics, and acid-reducing drugs, and environmental toxins like mercury, pesticides and BPA from plastics. Stress and age also contribute to a leaky gut.

Some factors that may contribute to Leaky Gut Syndrome include:

Ø  Inherent weak digestion (All children fall into this category)
Ø  Stress
Ø  Too much refined sugar
Ø  Inadequate dietary fiber
Ø  Excessive alcohol intake
Ø  Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
Ø  Food sensitivities or allergies
Ø  Radiation and cytotoxic drugs
Ø  Parasitic infections
Ø  Candida (an imbalance of intestinal flora)
Ø  Antibiotics
Ø  The candida connection

WHY Antibiotics? Antibiotics are a common cause of Leaky Gut Syndrome because of the destruction of the beneficial bacteria that are required for healthy metabolic functioning and an adequate immune response.  As a result, antibiotics also support the excessive growth of pathogenic fungi and yeast in the body, such as Candida Albicans.

WHY Candida? Candida contributes to Leaky Gut Syndrome by causing the small intestine’s epithelial cells to shrink.  Spaces are then formed, and intestinal toxins can pass through to the blood. Important immune agents in the epithelial mucus of the small intestine that normally neutralize toxins are overwhelmed by the increased flow, and the immune system is compromised.

Signs You Have a Leaky Gut

1. Digestive issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

2. Seasonal allergies or asthma.

3. Hormonal imbalances such as PMS or PCOS.

4. Diagnosis of an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, lupus, psoriasis, or celiac disease.

5. Diagnosis of chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia.

6. Mood and mind issues such as depression, anxiety, ADD or ADHD.

7. Skin issues such as acne, rosacea, or eczema.

8. Diagnosis of candida overgrowth.

9. Food allergies or food intolerances.

10. Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes or Metabolic Syndrome.

THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS OF APPLYING HYDROTHERAPY TO THE NATURAL HEALING JOURNEY

Hydrotherapy is the application of water, internally or externally, for the treatment of physical and physiological dysfunction.   This form of therapy can be utilized in the healing process of a variety of conditions, such as inflammatory disorders, digestive health, neurological support and immunomodulation.  This therapy can be applied to treat diseases or maintain overall health.  The use of water for therapy has been around for hundreds of years, as far back as the ancient Greeks and Romans, and forms an integral part in many traditional medicine systems.

WHY IS IT SO BENEFICIAL TO YOUR HEALTH?

The healing properties of hydrotherapy are based on its mechanical and/or thermal effects.  It makes use of the body’s reaction to hot and cold stimuli, to the protracted application of heat, to the pressure exerted by the water, and to the sensation of the water itself.  Nerves carry what is felt by the skin deeper into the body, where it is then vital in stimulating the immune system, influencing the production of stress hormones, improving circulation and digestion, encouraging the flow of blood, and lessening the body’s sensitivity to pain.

In addition, hydrotherapy supports healing by leading to the activation of the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS).  This arm of the Autonomic Nervous System is responsible for producing what is referred to as the “relaxation response,” a physiological response that is in direct contrast to the stress or “flight or fight” response.  When the body is at rest we are able to “heal” and “digest” properly.   What better way is there to promote healing than to place your body in the right environment to heal accordingly?

How Hydrotherapy Supports Healing:

MUSCLE SUPPORT: Loosens Tense, Tight Muscles And Encouraging Relaxation
METABOLISM: Increases The Metabolic Rate And Digestion Activity
SKIN TONE: Hydrates The Cells, Improving Skin And Muscle Tone
IMMUNE: Boost The Immune System, Allowing It To Function More Efficiently
CIRCULATION: Improves The Function Of The Internal Organs By Stimulating Their Blood Supply
DETOX: Dramatically Increases The Elimination Of Waste, Thus Assisting Detoxification

HOW HYDROTHERAPY WORKS IN THE HEALING PROCESS?

The way it works…heat is used to quiet and soothe the body, and to slow down the activity of internal organs. Cold is used to stimulate and invigorate, increasing internal activity within the body.  If you are experiencing tense muscles or anxiety, heat is recommended in the shower or bath.   For feeling tired and stressed out, it is recommended to take a warm shower or bath followed by a short cold shower to help stimulate the body and mind.

Optimal Zone of Challenge: just what the body is capable of, challenges it just enough

Tepid
Neutral
Warm
Hot
↓cool
↓ inflammation
↓ blood flow
Tonifies
Neither hot or cold
Unreactive nervous system
↑ circulation
↑ metabolism
↑ immune function
Decongestion
Same as warm but if you sustain the hot, it will cause detox

Tonify: strengthen without much stimulation
Decongest: move metabolic waste out of the way

APPLICATIONS OF HYDROTHERAPY:

There are several forms of hydrotherapy which are beneficial for many conditions.  These include baths and showers, neutral baths, sitz baths, contrast sitz baths, foot baths, cold mitten friction rub, steam inhalation, hot compresses, cold compresses, alternating hot and cold compresses, heating compresses, body wrap, wet sheet pack, and salt glow.

ALTERNATING SITZ BATH

The sitz bath is an immersion bath with the person seated in a tub with water covering the hips, buttocks, and lower abdomen. It is used to decrease congestion and increase circulation to the pelvic and lower abdominal organs.  Consult your Naturopathic health care practitioner before using this therapy.
Directions:
  1. Prepare a tub with hot water at a temperature of 105-110 degrees F. This range is about the same or slightly warmer than a typical hot tub. Do not exceed 120 degrees F. Fill the tub so that it comes to 1 inch above your navel when you are in a seated position.
  2. Put a long towel in a separate, small ice water bath (a bucket or large bowl will suffice) placed next to the tub.
  3. Sit in the hot bath for at least 3 minutes.
  4. After hot bath, stand and, without wringing out towel, wrap the cold towel around pelvis like a diaper. Make sure that the towel is touching your skin all the way around. Do not allow the towel to come up higher than 1 inch below your navel. Leave on for 30 seconds. Return towel to ice bath.
  5. Sit down in the hot bath for another 3 minutes.
  6. Repeat cold towel wrap, as before, for 30 seconds.
  7. Sit down in hot bath for another 3 minutes.
  8. Repeat cold towel wrap, as before, for 30 seconds.
  9. Following the third cold towel wrap, get out of tub and dry off.
CONSTITUTIONAL HYDROTHERAPY
Goals and principles of Constitutional Hydrotherapy treatment
One of the principles of naturopathic constitutional hydrotherapy is that health (and healing) is proportional to the normal flow of healthy blood. Naturopathic constitutional hydrotherapy influences the quantity of blood flowing through a given tissue and improves the quality of the blood circulating. This is accomplished in the treatment by enhancing blood flow through the organs of elimination (skin, liver, lungs, kidneys, colon) and subsequently deriving improved blood quality through the increased elimination of metabolic waste products. Concomitant treatment, aimed at tonifying the organs of digestion and improving the process of digestion and absorption of nutrients into the blood, help to build up desirable blood elements such as oxygen, nutrients, optimize blood and immune cell populations, further improving overall blood quality.  Consult your Naturopathic health care practitioner before using this therapy.
Viewing the blood as the vehicle conveying life to all cells (oxygen, nutrients, etc.), naturopathic constitutional hydrotherapy manipulates the circulation in order to maximize the benefits of this process for overall health and healing. It enhances the immune response, improves overall nutrition, promotes detoxification and helps restore nervous equilibrium. Naturopathic constitutional hydrotherapy works because it helps to optimize the quality of blood, while improving the efficiency of its circulation.
Procedure for Home Constitutional Hydrotherapy:
Although an in-office procedure with sine wave treatment is the most effective form of Constitutional Hydrotherapy, the repeated use of home constitutional hydrotherapy can be very useful. Consult your health care practitioner before using this therapy.
  1. Prepare a basin with cold water, add at least one tray of ice cubes to it, and place a thin hand towel into the cold water.
  2. The treatment recipient should stay warm, on a comfortable surface, and tucked under several blankets throughout the treatment. To keep the blankets dry, you can keep beach towels between the wet towels and the blankets.
  3. Soak 2 thick towels with hot water, the towels folded in half should still cover the chest and abdomen for a total of 4 layers.
  4. Take the bath towel from hot basin, wring it out, fold it and place the 2 hot towels on the affected area for 5 minutes. A 3rd hot towel would be ideally used to re-heat the chest and abdomen after the 5 minutes to assure the area is well warmed.
  5. After that time, wring out the cold towel, remove the hot towel from the affected area and quickly place the cold towel over the chest and abdomen. Wrap in warm blankets and allow the body to warm the cold towel over 10 minutes. If you do not warm the towel in 10 minutes, contact your physician for modified instructions.
  6. Prepare the hot towels again and apply to the entire back and repeat the cycle.
***NOTE** Apply preferred essential oil during treatment as an additive Aromatherapy benefit.

EPSOM SALT DETOX BATH

1.      Prepare Warm Water Bath (enough so that you can relax in)
2.      Add 2 to 4 cups Epsom Salt
3.      8-12 Drops of 2 Essential Oils
a.      Essential Oils: Lavender, Chamomile, Lemon Balm, or Orange Blossom
4.      ½ cup of White Vinegar
5.      ½ cup of Baking Soda (optional)
6.      Relax in bath for 30 -45 mins
7.      Prepare  Fresh Tea to support further detoxification:
a.      Fresh organic ginger root – brew / cook for 5 mins (hot tea) and relax in bath
8.      Take a Detox Bath once a week for 6 months

WHY ARE OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS?

When it comes to general health there are a few essential things that are needed on a daily basis in order to maintain a healthy system. The human body can make most of the types of fats it needs from other fats or raw materials. That isn’t the case for omega-3 fatty acids (also called omega-3 fats). These are essential fats—the body can’t make them from scratch but must get them from food. Foods high in Omega-3 include fish (cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, halibut), vegetable oils, nuts (especially walnuts), flax seeds, flaxseed oil, and leafy vegetables.

What makes omega-3 fats special?

They are an integral part of cell membranes throughout the body and affect the function of the cell receptors in these membranes. They provide the starting point for making hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction and relaxation of artery walls, and inflammation. They also bind to receptors in cells that regulate genetic function. Likely due to these effects, omega-3 fats have been shown to help prevent heart disease and stroke, may help control lupus, psoriasis, eczema, and rheumatoid arthritis, and may play protective roles in cancer and other conditions.

Due to the fact that most Americans eat way too much of the omega 6-oils found in meats and most vegetable oils, they suffer a relative deficiency of omega-3 oils.   In return, this deficency can affect the conditions listed above along with many others.

CONDITIONS BENEFITED BY FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTATION:

Allergies
Menopause
Osteoporosis
Alzheimer’s Disease
Asthma
Crohn’s Disease
Depression
Diabetes
Eczema
Psoriasis
Macular Degeneration
Arthritis
Baby Development
ADHD
Post-Partum
Migraines
Ulcerative Colitis
Cancer
High Cholesterol
AI Dx: Lupus, MS

Omega-3 fats are a key family of polyunsaturated fats. There are three main omega-3s:
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) come mainly from fish, so they are sometimes called marine omega-3s.
  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the most common omega-3 fatty acid in most Western diets, is found in vegetable oils and nuts (especially walnuts), flax seeds and flaxseed oil, leafy vegetables, and some animal fat, especially in grass-fed animals. The human body generally uses ALA for energy, and conversion into EPA and DHA is very limited.
Supplementation of Omega 3 Fatty Acids:

One of the major advances in nutritional medicine has been the ability to produce a fish oil supplement that is highly concentrated source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and also free from damaged fats (lipid peroxides), heavy metals, environmental contaminants, and other harmful compounds.
I always inform my patients, how important it is to use pharmaceutical-grade fish oil concentrates which are superior to earlier fish oil products as opposed to cheaper concentrates of fish oil.  TIP: AVOID buying fish oils from drug stores such as: CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Target, and local grocery stores.  Consult with your Alternative Medicine Expert about high-quality fish oil supplemenation.

RECOMMENDATION FOR GENERAL HEALTH:

Take a High-Quality Fish Oil Product to Provide 1.000 mg EPA + DHA per day
